Besides other welfare measures for the old age persons, needy, poorest among the poor people and downtrodden in the society, the trust always focus on the healthcare of such persons and persons who do not have anybody to look after them, which paved the way for starting up of a project called Navajeevanam—free Dialysis Project, started May 15,2005 and inaugurated by the then President of India Dr.A.P.J. Abdul kalam. Initially, two Dialysis machines were hired on rent @ Rs.10000/- each with a salary of Rs.15000/- per month to the Technician to perform the Dialysis at Lakshmi Hospital in Ernakulam.
The Navajeevanam Free Dialysis Centre: Undoubtedly, is Trust’s most prestigious project. Started with a single unit in 2005, free dialysis centres started functioning at 15 hospitals and a mobile unit in 13 Districts- one each in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kasaragod,Idukki, Kannur and 3 in Ernakulam and one Dialysis Unit is functioning in the Calicut City Service Co-operative bank Ltd. As at 2018, in six districts, six centres are continuing the free dialysis. In the beginning of 2011, The Executive Director of Sri Sathya Sai Orphanage Trust had a detailed discussion with the Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala on the Navajeevanam – a free dialysis project of the Trust and the necessity of Dialysis to the patients with renal failures. Based on the discussion, the Chief Minister had allotted an amount of Rs.50.00 Crores in the State’s budget to the Government Hospitals to conduct free dialysis for the patients with chronic renal disorders.
The result is, When Sri Sathya Sai Orphanage Trust started free dialysis in Ernakulam District, the charge per dialysis was Rs.2400/-in Private Hospitals. Whereas, the Trust has done it on free of cost to the patients. The Trust’s intervention in free dialysis could bring down the cost in Private hospitals to an amount of Rs.600/- per dialysis, where the common and poor are benefitted. Even now, free dialysis is needed much more for the kidney patients who are unable to offer abnormal amount to the private hospitals. The Trust’s efforts in free dialysis to the needy persons was appreciated in the year 2014 by the then Governor of Kerala Honourable Smt.Sheila Dikshit. The Navajeevanam- free dialysis centres for renal patients is an ongoing project. But whenever, the Government Hospitals start this project, the Sathya Sai Orphanage Trust does not want to duplicate, will withdraw and whenever the Government requests, we will take over the hospitals to carry out the free dialysis to the needy. We have also informed the Government of Kerala, whenever a crisis or problem arises to the Dialysis Centres run by Government Hospitals, the Sathya Sai Trust is always ready to take over such centres.
On August 1 st 2021, The Sathya Sai Trust crossed the mark of 5,00,000 free dialysis, performed through various centres across the State over a period of 15 years and also set a New Indian an Asian record for conducting the maximum number of free dialysis programmes in the state of Kerala through its 20 free dialysis units in 13 districts. Currently, there are thousands of beneficiaries under this project. The Trust had already spent around Rupees 50 crore in this project, the First in India and the mission continues.
