Sri Sathya Sai Orphanage Trust, Kerala, India was established on 17th June 1996 as an NGO. Since its inception, the Trust has been driven by the sagacious slogan,‘Service to humanity is Service to God’, which is a blissful adage obtained from Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The Trust’s founders, Sri. K.N.Ananda Kumar and Justice Chandrasekhara Menon began the organization on getting the permission duly granted by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Living to its motto, the Trust provides an array of altruistic service, reinforcing the society’s cultural, moral and spiritual pillars. With the piety in practice, over 140 philanthropic projects had already rolled out of the Trust’s 25 years of existence. From a humble beginning marked by an orphanage sheltering just 9 boys, today’s achievements remain shining testimonials to the Trust’s diligence and synergy.
“ A few years back, a person named Mr. Francis, from Chirayinkeezhu had visited Sai Gramam. He said that he sold peanuts for a living. When I enquired where his shop was, he said that he doesn’t have a shop, but he sells peanuts in a pushcart on the roadside. He mentioned that he has been hearing about the activities of Sai Gramam and wished to come here and do his bit for a very long time. Saying so, he took out 9,000 rupees from his pocket and gave it in the office for “Annadanam” saying that he has been saving it for the last few months to give it here.” It is the love and kindness of thousands of people who believed in humanity, that is behind the ever growing Sai Gramam family and the successful completion of 25 years of Service to Humanity.
Sai Gramam is made, with not just money, but with love, pain, sacrifice, humanity and blessings of the Almighty and one can experience that in every nook and corner of Sai gramam. Let me take this opportunity to thank each and every person who has been there with us in our journey, contributing, time, money, prayers and whatever is possible of them. Each paise has been valuable to us and one can see that Sai Gramam is made of the kind support, love and prayers of hundreds and thousands of benevolent people. We are happy to say that your support has made it possible for us to reach out to lakhs of people over these years. Hundreds of children are getting quality education, thousands of poor patients getting free medicines and treatment, thousands getting homes and thousands getting food and water. So many lives are being transformed, for it is the poorest of the poor that we reach out to. More importantly, hundreds of people including children and the elderly who had lost everyone and had lost faith in humanity with their bitter experiences have been able to find a place where they are being loved and taken care of, they have found a big family that loves them unconditionally…
It would not have been possible without all your support and God’s blessings. Thank you!
- K.N. Ananda Kumar, Founder and Executive Director
We started our first project on 17th June 1996. To begin with, it was a small orphanage sheltering 9 homeless boys in a rented house at Kowdiar Gardens in Trivandrum. It was, but the beginning of an unceasing journey of social service that today embraces more than 140 projects, 320 employees and over a million beneficiaries. By virtue of the ever growing social service, the Trust stands as the largest NGO in India. May it be education or medical, the service emanating from the Trust can be accessed by the needy absolutely free of cost. This is in fact a humble attempt to serve the poor in its real meaning that is viewed upon as a revolutionary approach to plug the influx of heavy monopolization, commercialization and rampant exploitation of the poor in the health and education sectors.
Sai Gramam, the central project of the Trust was launched in 2006. Driven by the Gandhian vision of Grama Swaraj for a self-reliant village, Sai Gramam has been able to achieve self-reliance in different areas. Its sprawling campus is equipped with successful Rain Water harvesting, Biogas plant, Solar Street Light, Solar Water Heater, Gokulam Dairy Farm, Vegetable Garden, Paddy fields etc. The foundation stone of Sai Gramam was laid by the cricket legend, Shri. Sunil Gavaskar in 2005. Last year, then Union Minister Shri. Alphonse Kannanthanam formally announced the successful completion of rupees One hundred million worth projects at Sai Gramam. This encompasses 60 projects including School for autistic children, Montessori, primary and upper primary school, Arts and science college, AYUSH Wellness centre, Art village, Homes for children, senior citizens and mentally retarded among others.
All those who are taken into our old age homes as well as orphanages are salvaged from the streets.
Justice T. Chandrashekhara Menon (Late), Founder Chairman
